The outside of the book is very nice looking. It is green leather with gold design and writing on the cover. It also has gold trimmed pages and a gold ribbon as a page marker. However, it all goes down hill when you open the book. The pages are printed cheaply and the words smudge easily. But that’s not the worst part. The translation is horrible! Here is the first sentence of the first story: “Long ago, when wishes often came true, there lived a King whose daughters were all handsome, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun himself, who has seen everything, was bemused every time he shone over her because of her beauty.”

I was inspired to buy this book after reading the AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JANET FRAME. She wrote about how as a little girl she would hideout and read the GRIMM FAIRY TALES and escape into her own imaginative world. I never did that as a child…and so…I bought this book. I only read a few of the stories…but I’d love to read some of the stories aloud to a young child to inspire their imagination. And so…for this reason I give it 5 STARS…it’s a CLASSIC…and I have yet to finish it…perhaps one day.

This is a great book to read to your kids at bedtime, (but I will warn you that some of the stories are a little scary — you can save those ones for other reading times). It’s a large compendium of short fairy tales, mostly about three pages each in length. It has a nice typeface for reading aloud. These stories are OLD so, while there’s a little archaic language herein, it’s also a great opportunity for children to expand their knowledge and their vocabulary. Some of the stories have strange endings, which I also like to teach kids that everyone doesn’t live “happily ever after”. I had a lesser volume of Grimm’s Fairy tales for many years and this one is essentially the same book with many stories added in. A great value and I recommend it.
