The Truth About Vampires

August 4th, 2010 by Al

David Slone asked:

The mere mention of the word Vampire brings up an image of a pale white man with sharp teeth drinking blood. Or it may also remind you of a beautiful woman who in an instant would turn into a blood-sucking ghost. While much of this has been fed into our mind by the Vampire movies, there are certain realities as to why they have been pictured like this. Let us now look into the true story behind Vampires that led to all this.

Ancient Vampire Beliefs

The Vampire stories were around long before Vlad the Impaler. Few ancient societies believed in blood thirsty Gods and worshipped them. Some societies, like the Africans were afraid of vampires while others like the Egyptians worshipped them. During the Roman Empire, the Vampire cults flourished. The infertile females believed that drinking the blood of fertile females would make them fertile. Even the males thought that drinking blood would make them more potent. These rumors were spread by the captives and slaves whom the Roman soldiers caught during wars. But this blood drinking practice lead to the spreading of blood related diseases. The Roman emperor then banned this practice and hired assassins to execute those who followed this ritual. The assassins used small daggers which closely resembled the crucifix. Later on, this became the basis of killing a Vampire with a crucifix.

Vlad The Impaler

Vlad the Impaler, also know as Vlad Dracul which meant ‘the devil’, was a tyrant who ruled Transylvania around the 15th century. During this time period, the stories of vampires were quite popular. He was called ‘the Impaler’ because he loved to impale his enemies. He would thrust a long wooden spear into his enemies and watch them die a gruesome death. He hated non-Christians and used this technique against them. So the non-Christians feared him and put crosses in front of their homes to keep Dracula away from them.

Strigoi

The Transylvanians also believed in Strigoi (the undead) who walked on earth because they were either not properly buried or lived an evil life. To stop them people thrust a stake across their chest and placed them in coffin. The stake was driven through the coffin and into the ground to keep them from coming out.

How to Write a Novel – Writing Your Own Bloodsucking Vampire Novel

July 31st, 2010 by Al

Donna Monday asked:

Vampires are back in a big way, and the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer has sparked the imaginations of many aspiring authors. I’m assuming you’ve read the book and seen the movie, and now you’re all excited to learn how to write a novel like Twilight. Well, I’m going to burst your bubble right here and now – ping!

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I’m sure that Stephenie Meyer thinks it’s kind of cool that so many people love her work, but, as an aspiring writer, you should not want to write a book exactly like hers.

Why? You say.

Because, anybody who reads it will just think you’re a big copycat, that’s why. Of course, this won’t stop the slew of imitators coming out with their own badly written versions of the popular Twilight books. But, your novel doesn’t have to be one of them.

The truth is, Ms. Meyer has done her share of fiction reading, and still managed to come up with a unique story in the crowded vampire genre. Sure, people are ragging on her for not being a great writer, but whether they liker her writing style or not, her characters and story have some unique qualities.

If Ms. Meyer’s story didn’t have some special uniqueness, then it wouldn’t stand out from all the other vampire romance novels – and there are lots of them. As an aspiring author, what you really want to do is capture the same kind of magic that her story has. Creating this originality means you need a good imagination and willingness to expand on the vampire legend a bit.

I know this because I’ve written my own black vampire novel. I’m from a different generation, so I was inspired by the Ann Rice vampire series, which taught me that you can make vampire characters behave and say things that go beyond old stereotypes. I mean, having a vampire wear a cape and go around saying “I want to suck your blood” is quaint now days.

When I wrote my black vampire book, I hadn’t read any other black vampire books, and I didn’t want to recreate an Ann Rice style novel. No, I wanted my vampires and story to be unique, which I think I achieved.

So, here’s some things to keep in mind while working on your own vampire book:

Know Your Audience

Who are you writing this book for? Who will be your typical reader? Teen or adult fiction? Before you begin, you need to know this. Now, your audience for your story may expand, just like it did for the Twilight books, but you should stick with writing for your core audience.

Vampire Characters

Who exactly are your vampires? What do they look like? What kind of habits do they have? Edward is brooding and walks slowly. If you want to create a romantic male vampire, please don’t create one just like Edward. The audience for these types of stories already have Edward. What unique type of romantic vampire can you bring them?

My leading male vampire is handsome, charming and laid back. But, he does have this hidden dark side to him, because he does kill people to satisfy his bloodlust. Deciding whether or not your lead vampire will kill people, or, be a “vegetarian” is an important characteristic. It will affect his relationships with any mortal women he’s involved with.

What kind of vampire powers will your vampires have? Most vampires can fly, but what else can you think of that’s a cool power? You can take an existing vampire power like telepathy and give it an interesting twist. My vampires can stand some daylight, but only if they do something specific. You can weave these special powers subtly into your story, which creates a sense of authenticity for the reader.

Mortal Female Lead Character

Who is the leading mortal woman in your story? Why is she encountering her vampire? Is it love at first site, or does he have to win her over? There must be something that stands out about your leading lady – a reason why he’s strongly attracted to her. If you can’t make your leading lady appealing enough, then your story is going to be a let down. The reader must feel a connection between this mortal woman and the lead vampire.

Supporting Characters

You can have a variety of strong vampire, mortal and other mystical characters in your story. Before you begin writing, sit down and create all of the supporting characters you want to appear. What is their role in the story and why are they there?

Some supporting characters can add lots of color and drama to a story, while others are just minor characters that keep the story interesting. Don’t take these characters lightly. Creating strong supporting characters can take your story to a whole new level of excitement.

Create characters that you like writing about, and don’t worry if you don’t see them in someone else’s story. The New Moon part of the Twilight series features werewolves. My story doesn’t have these characters because I don’t want to write about them. Yet, my story is fine without them.

Do you know who the Wampati are? No? That’s because I made them up and they only appear in my story.

Location of the Story

You need to make decisions about where they live and who they live with. The location where the action takes place is a big part of the story. It’s important that you pick a location that you’re comfortable writing about. Picking a particular big city, or rural area, just because you saw it in a movie may mean you’re going to struggle with authenticity.

Writing a novel, especially a fantasy one, requires that the author get into the feeling and mood of the story. If you’re not comfortable with the location, your characters aren’t going to be either. Create a location that’s close to home, or somewhere you visit often. You can even make up a town or city to your liking. You should be able to see this place clearly when you close your eyes. When you’re writing about a location you’re familiar with, your story will flow better.

Story Plot

Creating an interesting story is essential. You can have great characters, but if you put them into a slow, plodding story, your readers may valiently finish the book, but probably not want to read anything else you write ever again. I think a lot of new novel writers struggle with this.

But, Stephenie’s books aren’t that great and people are raving about them.

Yes, maybe Stephenie Meyer isn’t a great writer, but she obviously got something in her plot right. She created compelling characters and put them into a storyline that resonates with millions of females (and some men) – both young and old. To be fair, her books are written for tweens and teenagers. Many adults just happen to like the Twilight storyline too.

It’s unlikely that you’ll have the same good fortune as Stephenie, so just focus on creating great characters, and putting them into your own original vampire story. If other people, besides yourself, truly enjoy reading your novel, then you’ll have accomplished your goal of writing an entertaining vampire book.

Does the Tooth Fairy Keep Up With Inflation?

July 29th, 2010 by Al

Stacy Rose asked:

The Tooth Fairy has been a frequent visitor in American homes since the early 1900′s. The thought of a magical pixie exchanging money for teeth has helped generations of children through the unpleasant and often scary process of losing their baby teeth. Most lose all 20 by the age of 12, and even though they may be old enough not to believe in fairies any longer, most families play out the game to the end. It is an expression of love for our children to console them for their loss. When my son recently told my husband and me that he had his first wiggly tooth, it sparked memories of our own tooth exchanges. We both remember receiving a silver dollar for every tooth, but wondered if we should calculate for inflation.

I discovered through online research that a lady named Rosemary Wells, a former professor at Northwestern University Dental School and an expert on Tooth Fairy lore, did a study tracking the amounts the Tooth Fairy left for teeth from 1900-1980. The results were that indeed, the Tooth Fairy keeps up with current economics. I wish I had been able to view the actual study in its entirety. I would have liked to see the rates from year to year. Instead, I asked my friends what the current rate was among them, and most told me $5.

Somehow though, the evening that the tooth finally made its debut came as a surprise to us, and all we had in the house was a $20 bill. It was actually a miracle that we had that since we rarely have cash. Our son was VERY happy in the morning, and we had to explain that it was just because the first tooth is so special that he got so much. From then on, we have kept a little stash of $5 bills hidden in the house just for Tooth Fairy use.

I was still curious to see how the price of a tooth had risen over the years, so I decided to conduct my own small scale study and ask all my friends and family. I received responses from 25 cents all the way to $100 per tooth! The majority of people who responded lost their baby teeth in the 1960′s and unanimously remember getting 50 cents per tooth.

I looked up average prices for the 1960′s, and found that a loaf of bread cost 25 cents. Therefore, if children wanted to take their Tooth Fairy money and buy bread (humor me), they would have been able to get 2 loaves per tooth. The average price for a loaf of bread today is $3, so to allow children to be able to buy 2 loaves, they would need to get $6. A toy store conducted a survey of 150 Moms back in 2006, and found that the average amount they gave for a tooth was $3. Tsk! Tsk! That means that parents today are only half as generous as their parents in that their children can only buy one loaf of bread.

About 25% of people believe that larger teeth are worth more, and give more for molars. The amount does seem to vary by location too. In some areas, $20-$25 per tooth is average. I recommend asking your children what others are getting and asking friends before your child loses that first tooth so you may determine the going rate for your neighborhood. You do not want to give more than others (other parents will resent you when their children complain), and you do not want to give too little or your child will be distraught thinking that there is something wrong with his teeth.

If you can’t or are unwilling to pay the average, I came across a posting with a really clever explanation. You can say that the Tooth Fairy sets out with the same amount of money each night. If there are only a few children who have lost teeth, they get a fairly large amount of money, and if there are lots of children that night, each one will get a smaller portion of the pot. Pretty ingenious! However, if you use this excuse, I recommend that at least once, you come up with the higher amount so you can say, “Well, FINALLY, you were as lucky as your friends!”.

My husband and I have decided to stick with $5 per tooth plus a $1 off coupon for bread.

Tooth Fairy Costumes – Some Great Suggestions For Your Tooth Fairy Outfit

July 26th, 2010 by Al

Dan Fresh asked:

Up until now, Tooth Fairy costumes have always come in two main types. There are those that are glamorous fairy costumes with a little twist, that is to say something within their costume that represents a dental theme, and then there are those outrageous novelty outfits for men.

As we all know, the Tooth Fairy is a mythical character who gives a child money or gifts in exchange for one of their baby teeth, when they fall out. Usually, the child places his or her tooth under their pillow at night and the fairy is supposed to come during the night and take the tooth from under the pillow and replace it with money. The first type of Tooth Fairy outfit is a female costume and is basically a representation of this.

Typically, these type of Tooth Fairy costumes consist of a shiny white corset top and a white or light coloured ruffle skirt, with a pair of white or light coloured pink wings. Pretty much what you would expect from any regular type of fairy costume, except if you look more closely there is likely to be some sort of tooth motif or pattern on the skirt. Furthermore, the fairy’s most important item, her wand, is almost definitely going to feature some kind of teeth theme.

Meanwhile, the second type of Tooth Fairy outfit could not be anything less like the fairy that comes to visit our children at night, at least I certainly hope not. These hilarious costumes are for those men that do not mind making a spectacle of themselves and usually consist of a white tank top with a big tooth motif on it, a pair of white shorts, a white tutu, a headpiece and some white fairy wings. Worn together with a pair of white stockings or tights, these kind of outrageous costumes are bound to be the talk of the party.

I began this article by saying that up until now there was really only two types of Tooth Fairy costumes on the market, but that might be about to change. Nothing inspires a new range of outfits like a Hollywood film does and guess what, a new film has just debuted at the box office and what is more, it features some awesome outfits.

The film, The Tooth Fairy, is a comedy starring Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, and Julie Andrews. Johnson plays a minor league hockey player nicknamed “The Tooth Fairy”, because he hits the opposing players so hard that he knocks out their teeth. As the film progresses, Johnson turns into a real fairy and gets to wear a pretty nifty outfit. Only time will tell if this film spawns a whole new range of costumes, but in the meantime we have two great outfits to be going on with.
